Thermal Spas Near the Romagna Riviera: The Best Options

After a week of beach, heat and nightlife, a day at a thermal spa is the best way to recharge. Romagna and its surroundings have some of Italy's finest spas, all reachable within an hour from the coast. Here are the ones genuinely worth the trip.

Terme di Riolo (Riolo Terme – RA)

Distance from Rimini: 75 km (55 min) | From Cesena: 40 km (40 min)

The most famous thermal spa in inland Romagna. Sulphate-bicarbonate-calcium waters, renowned for their beneficial properties on joints, skin and the respiratory system. The thermal park is set among the green hills around Faenza.

What's there:

  • Outdoor thermal pools (28–38°C)

Terme di Bagno di Romagna (Bagno di Romagna – FC)

Distance from Rimini: 100 km (1h20) | From Cesena: 65 km (1h)

The furthest from the coast, but also the most spectacular. Bagno di Romagna is an Apennine village at 490 m altitude, with completely natural sulphurous waters. Fresh mountain air combined with hot thermal baths is a hard combination to beat in summer.

What's there:

  • Grand Hotel Terme (historic, with panoramic outdoor pools)
  • Public thermal baths with outdoor pools at 37°C
  • Hiking in the Foreste Casentinesi National Park

Prices (public baths):

Weekly pass€60

Note: at Bagno di Romagna, staying at least one night is worth it to fully enjoy the mountain atmosphere.

Terme di Rivalta (Sant'Ilario d'Enza – RE)

Distance from Rimini: 130 km (1h30) | Further away but spectacular

Terme di Rivalta is one of Emilia's most complete spa complexes. Bicarbonate-sulphate-calcium waters, wellness centre with a 1,500 sqm aquatic circuit, Olympic pool and luxury spa. If you're on a road trip through the region, it's worth a stop.

Informal Thermal Pools: Natural Hot Springs

Sorgenti di Tabiano Bagni (PR)

About 2 hours from Rimini (towards Parma), these natural sulphurous springs allow free bathing in some natural pools. A more authentic experience than commercial spas, almost free of charge. Only for those who don't mind the smell of sulphur.

How to Plan Your Day

  1. Leave the coast by 9:00
  2. Arrive at the spa by 10:30
  3. Check in with your pre-booked treatment
  4. Lunch break at the spa restaurant or in the village (€20–30 set menu)
  5. Afternoon: free use of pools or second treatment

Practical Tips

  • Bring: swimwear (two sets if doing mud baths — the first one stains), flip-flops, a bathrobe (often available to rent on-site for €5)
  • Booking: always required for specific treatments, not always needed for pools
  • Best season: May–June and September (less crowded, ideal temperatures)
  • Children: many spas have dedicated pools; check age policies for treatments
