Palio di Ferrara 2026 — Historic Horse Race

The Palio di Ferrara is one of Italy's most evocative historical re-enactments: every year, in Piazza Ariostea, the Este city relives the splendour of the Renaissance with an extraordinary costumed procession involving over 1,000 participants. The historical cortege departs from Castello Estense and winds through the medieval centre in full pageantry. The 2026 edition culminates in the horse race on 30 May at 8 PM, preceded by the grand Corteo Estense on 23 May. The calendar also includes the Giochi della Corte — inter-district challenges in historical draughts, archery, and falconry — as well as youth flag-waving competitions. The Palio is organised by the Associazione Sbandieratori e Musici di Ferrara, one of Europe's oldest medieval re-enactment companies. A major cultural and tourism event that transports the whole city back in time.
